'All these places are the same!'
'All these places are the same!'
'SAME!'
Phrases I hear time and time again wherever I go... Alright. I pretty much stay within the fart arse walls of the north but never the less, we need a change. We need a stomach saviour. A menu martyr. A flavour fuhrer! As a close few friends and myself ponder this realisation, fate pulls into the driveway with news. Brunswick bound we followed fate towards a warehouse, hidden amongst commercial and residential madness.
Upon arrival I was first struck by feelings of reluctance and mild anxiety, aware that i may have made a 12 minute car trip for next to no joy. But then i entered. This warehouse is littered with antique furniture and inspiring local artwork. with an open counter, high ceilings, funky tunes and a 20 seater communal table, I think i have found my haven.
The menu was all i have been looking for. They have a sour cream baked eggs with mushrooms and Gruyere cheese, Lemon zest cheese blintzes in apple & berry compote, Bigos (7 hour polish stew) and home made pierogi (polish dumplings) just to name a few things. I had the polski toast which is alike a french toast but they use glicks 'khalah' which turns the end product into a sponge cake like base with grilled bacon and roasted Roma tomatoes. Not only was the taste incredible, it came out in less than 10 minutes and the guys that run the place are very pleasant to deal with. We also got a pierogi platter to share. I inquired about these dumplings and as the story goes, 'the dough, fillings, rolling and folding are all done in house, with love by the owners, their grandmother and mother'
If I was to some up Court Jester in one sentence, this would be it- 'An Eastern European taste with the contemporary vision of the Brunswick art scene'.
Do yourself a favour and go down and check it out. These guys have just opened recently so get in before everyone else finds out about it. They are relatively hidden so you have to look for it.
The address is 15 Breese Street, Brunswick. If you go down Hope street from Sydney Road, it is your first right. Stop when you see the massive mural on the wall of the warehouse and you know you've found the place!
Happy eating folks!
